# Chelsea ‘test waters’ over move for “super fast” former Arsenal star who currently plays under Maurizio Sarri

[Chelsea’s](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/chelsea-fc-transfer-rumours/) revival under Enzo Maresca continued at the weekend, as the Blues made it three wins on the bounce in all competitions with a commanding 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest.

Following impressive triumphs over Benfica in the Champions League and Liverpool in the Premier League, a youthful Chelsea side once again delivered, with Josh Acheampong, Pedro Neto, and Reece James all finding the net.

There were some nervy moments at the back — and yet another red card, this time for Malo Gusto — but overall, it was another encouraging display from a side seemingly growing in confidence.

Still, with defensive injuries mounting, Maresca is said to be keen on further reinforcements — and could turn to a familiar name for Premier League fans.

According to a new report from Il Messaggero, [via La Lazio Siamo Noi](https://www.lalaziosiamonoi.it/rassegna-stampa/calciomercato-lazio-sarri-aspetta-gennaio-la-priorita-e-un-terzino-233123), Chelsea have expressed interest in signing former Arsenal left-back Nuno Tavares, who currently plays under Maurizio Sarri at Lazio.

The Portuguese defender endured a mixed spell in North London and during a loan stint at Nottingham Forest, but since his move to Serie A in 2024, he has rediscovered his form. Tavares has registered nine assists in 36 games for Lazio, becoming a key attacking outlet down the left flank.

[Described as *“super fast”* by former Premier League goalkeeper Shay Given](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/articles/c72gkj2zl48o), Tavares has caught the attention of several top clubs, including Juventus and Chelsea, both of whom have reportedly “tested the waters” over a possible deal.

Lazio, however, are said to value the 25-year-old at around £43 million, which could prove a stumbling block for the Blues. With [Marc Cucurella playing superbly](https://chelseanews.com/blog/chelsea-news-marc-cucurella-ohara/), however, Chelsea may instead want to opt for a cheaper back-up at left-back.

Still, Tavares’ resurgence under Sarri — and his familiarity with English football — could make him a tempting target as Maresca looks to fine-tune his growing squad.
