# West Ham United: Dean Jones makes Philippe Coutinho claim

**Transfer insider Dean Jones has weighed in on the news linking Aston Villa loanee Philippe Coutinho with a move to West Ham.**

### The Lowdown: Coutinho at Villa

The Brazil international joined Steven Gerrard at Villa Park in January, [signing a six-month loan deal](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11677/12512540/aston-villa-transfer-news-philippe-coutinho-joins-on-loan-from-barcelona-until-the-end-of-the-season), with the option for the Midlands club to make it permanent for £33m.

The attacking midfielder has entered the [final 18 months of his Barcelona contract](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/philippe-coutinho/profil/spieler/80444), and [it has been made clear](https://www.si.com/soccer/liverpool/transfers/barcelona-looking-to-sell-coutinho-for-cut-price#:~:text=According%20to%20Spanish%20newspaper%20SPORT,price%20of%20%C2%A343%20million.) that the Spanish giants are looking to offload him following his underwhelming [£146m move](https://www.skysports.com/transfer/news/12691/11200027/philippe-coutinho-seals-146m-barcelona-move-from-liverpool).

[Coutinho](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/philippe-coutinho/leistungsdaten/spieler/80444) produced a magnificent start to life for Villa, scoring twice and assisting a further two in his opening three games in the English top-flight.

### The Latest: Jones’ claims about Coutinho

West Ham have previously been linked with Coutinho, as the Catalan outfit were keen to offload the player in [last year’s summer window](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1477076/Liverpool-Philippe-Coutinho-Barcelona-transfer-latest-update-news-SNT), but Jones believes that West Ham should be cautious in the battle to sign the 29-year-old.

Speaking to [GiveMeSport](https://www.givemesport.com/87976630-west-ham-warned-over-potential-deal-for-65-cap-big-name-star), he claimed: *“I don’t know where I see Coutinho right now.* *I think West Ham will be mindful of what they’re signing in Coutinho, if they were to go down that path. Because it would take a lot of money.”*

### The Verdict: Hammers hijacking Villa move?

Coutinho’s Brazil compatriot and former Liverpool teammate Roberto Firmino has [stated](https://www.goal.com/en-us/news/coutinho-has-magical-powers-firmino-heaps-praise-upon-phenomenal-/g0yh5e5v41dm1hty0vp6wj909) that the 29-year-old has “magical powers”, and it seems that Gerrard came to the same conclusion during his time with the Reds. Coutinho [has said](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11677/12512540/aston-villa-transfer-news-philippe-coutinho-joins-on-loan-from-barcelona-until-the-end-of-the-season) that, despite interest from elsewhere, he chose Villa after being convinced to do so by the 41-year-old, so it’s clear that the two have a good relationship.

Whilst Villa have the option to make the deal permanent for £33m, it has been claimed that they could [negotiate the fee](https://www.teamtalk.com/west-ham-united/philippe-coutinho-west-ham-warned-over-potential-cost-marquee-signing-aston-villa?unislogin) even lower. However, Barcelona will sell to the highest bidder, so the question is, will the Hammers have the funds to compete with Villa?

With the Irons making club-record bids for [Kalvin Phillips](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/12528567/kalvin-phillips-west-ham-bid-50m-for-leeds-midfielder-paper-talk), [Raphinha](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-10454897/West-Ham-bid-rejected-Leeds-winger-Raphinha-David-Moyes-continues-hunt-forward.html) and [Darwin Nunez](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/west-ham-fail-in-club-record-ps60m-deadline-day-transfer-move-for-benfica-striker-darwin-nunez-b979730.html) in January, it is safe to say that they have the money to do so. It is just a case of whether they want to spend it on someone in Coutinho who will turn 30 this summer.
