# Crystal Palace: Eagles want James Milner

**Crystal Palace are [reportedly](https://www.fichajes.net/noticias/james-milner-podria-cambiar-aires-estos-son-2-equipos-premier-le-quieren-20220214.html) keen on signing Liverpool midfielder James Milner in the summer.**

### The Lowdown: Milner’s contract situation

At this moment in time, Milner, labelled as a [‘class act’](https://twitter.com/LivEchoLFC/status/1224795661956263936?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) by The Liverpool Echo, is set to be a free agent at the end of [June](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/james-milner/profil/spieler/3333).

The 36-year-old, on [£150,000-a-week](https://salarysport.com/football/player/james-milner/), has been at Anfield since 2015 and has been key for Jurgen Klopp over the years, playing [274 times](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/james-milner/leistungsdaten/spieler/3333/saison/ges) for the Reds.

Palace have now been name-checked with an interest in Milner, who said last month that Patrick Vieira is doing a [‘great job’](https://www.football365.com/news/liverpool-veteran-milner-wary-of-tough-test-from-ex-teammate-vieira) at Selhurst Park.

### The Latest: Eagles interest

According to [Fichajes](https://www.fichajes.net/noticias/james-milner-podria-cambiar-aires-estos-son-2-equipos-premier-le-quieren-20220214.html), both Palace and Watford are keen on securing Milner’s services ahead of the 2022/23 season.

Both have ‘consulted’ Milner’s situation and ‘intend to make moves’ for the versatile midfielder.

However, [Fabrizio Romano](https://twitter.com/FabrizioRomano/status/1493539909776334849) has recently revealed that Klopp wants to keep hold of Milner for a further 12 months, with talks underway over a new deal.

### The Verdict: Avoid?

Milner is coming to the end of a [glittering](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/james-milner/erfolge/spieler/3333) career, and although he could be a shrewd squad player, we feel that Palace should avoid a move for the Englishman.

His whopping salary is more than any other [Palace player](https://www.spotrac.com/epl/crystal-palace/payroll/), and bringing him to Selhurst Park doesn’t appear to fit Vieira’s transfer mould. [Five](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/crystal-palace/transfers/verein/873) of the Palace manager’s permanent signings have been 25 years of age or younger, which points to a long-term project being built at the club.

Therefore, paying Milner big money for the 2022/23 campaign may not be the wisest of moves, however, a midfielder could be the club’s main priority if they can’t secure Conor Gallagher’s services on a permanent basis.
