Rollback to 2016 and the Eagles picked up the French international on a free, expecting some international standard performances at Selhurst Park. Let’s just say things didn’t work out. Despite Palace fans very much getting behind the ‘keeper (as shown on [HITC](https://www.hitc.com/en-gb/2016/07/02/crystal-palace-fans-react-on-twitter-to-steve-mandanda-signing-e/)), he just didn’t fit in with the club;[knee surgery keeping him out for 24 games](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/steve-mandanda/verletzungen/spieler/23951) certainly didn’t help.

The 34-year-old only managed nine league appearances for Palace, before he was sold back to Marseille for an [undisclosed fee](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/40575993).

Mandanda has picked up an impressive [29](https://www.national-football-teams.com/player/8238/Steve_Mandanda.html) caps for his country, playing at least one match per year for his country for the [last 11 years](https://www.national-football-teams.com/player/8238/Steve_Mandanda.html). While he did not play a match in France’s victorious World Cup campaign, he did come home with a winner’s medal.

Fan account [@SWPalace](https://twitter.com/SWPalace/status/1185929794975911936) tweeted about THE French ‘keeper with the caption ‘how weird was this?’.

Many fans responded with a variety of messages. Some called him a top goalkeeper, while others remembered his slightly worse times.

Here are some of the replies below…

> Hasn’t he got a World Cup winners medal?

> Top class keeper. Great signings sometimes don’t work out for any number of reasons. He had injuries and didn’t settle in England.
