# Crystal Palace: Fans rave over Hayden Mullins after discussing his career at the club

**A lot of Crystal Palace fans are discussing former player Hayden Mullins after a fan asked on [Twitter](https://twitter.com/WhyteleafeEagle/status/1258309122484776961?s=20) whether he was a ‘hero’ or ‘zero’ during his time in South London.**

The defensive midfielder made 110 appearances for the Eagles’ first team across five seasons from 1998 to 2003, via [Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/hayden-mullins/transfers/spieler/14052), and [scored twice](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/hayden-mullins/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/14052/verein/873) in that time.

The player is a product of the club’s youth academy but sadly left on a free transfer to go to London rivals West Ham in 2003 and has enjoyed spells at Portsmouth, Reading and Birmingham throughout his career. \[via [Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/hayden-mullins/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/14052)\]

It is fair to say that he is a example of the type of talent that habitually comes from the club’s academy and fellow youth products like Victor Moses, Nathaniel Clyne, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Wilfried Zaha emphasise how good the youth set up is, as per [Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/crystal-palace/jugendarbeit/verein/873).

Many Eagles fans flooded to the tweet to praise Mullins and it seems like he has a left a good mark on the club. Even though he is currently on the [coaching staff at Watford](https://www.watfordfc.com/teams/under-23s/hayden-mullins), it will be interesting to see if he returns in a coaching role to Selhurst Park in the future.

Here is what some Palace fans had to say following the post on Twitter:

> So today’s past [#cpfc](https://x.com/hashtag/cpfc?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) player is Hayden Mullins he started of as a trainee in 96 then made his debut in 98. Hayden went onto make 269 appearances scoring 25 goals before leaving us in 2003 Was Hayden a hero/zero or somewhere in between? [pic.twitter.com/uKLNfLp86y](https://t.co/uKLNfLp86y)

> Didn’t he take over Southgate as our youngest ever Captain? Hero.

> Hero. So underrated by so many. Versatile. So calm on the ball. Scored some important goals as well. Played throughout admin as if he was a seasoned pro despite being first and second season. The casual tag was hugely unfair

> HERO
>
> Great midfield player. After his debut I wondered why so late in his career ?He just slotted in like a real pro. Great talent
>
> Admired his career after us, with the exception of managing Watford and their team tactics this season. But then wondered was he actually in charge

> Hero…classy player. Agree with Nav on air of casualness probably why the person I sit next to couldn’t stand him but he is wrong. 😁

> Very decent player. Underrated by many. On balance a hero.
