Crystal Palace are seemingly trying to tie Patrick van Aanholt down to a new contract, with his current deal expiring next year, but reports believe the negotiations are not going to plan.
Discussions with van Aanholt hit a stumbling block
According to Football Insider, talks with defender van Aanholt over a new deal are facing collapse. There is interest from one ‘elite club’ in securing the Holland international to a pre-contract in January.
This could be a big blow for Palace
However, fellow left-back Tyrick Mitchell is now starting to become a fan favourite for his defensive work. The 21-year old has managed on average 2.3 clearances and four tackles a game this term (WhoScored). He has made 24 tackles in total, which is the joint-fourth most in the league, so perhaps van Aanholt’s departure wouldn’t be a disaster on the pitch, but losing him for nothing certainly would be one off it.
Last season, Tony Cascarino was full of praise for the Dutchman as he said: “His season has just been pretty spectacular for me. Him and Gary Cahill have done brilliantly at Palace.”
Despite the recent success of Mitchell, to keep the duo at the club would be a huge bonus for Roy Hodgson, and to lose such a talented player for free due to his contract expiring would be a nightmare.
