Crystal Palace: Fans fume over Gary Cahill’s performance vs Leeds - Crystal Palace News

Many Crystal Palace fans were not happy with defender Gary Cahill following his performance in the defeat to Leeds at Elland Road on Monday night.

The 35-year-old veteran centre-back has had a great career, however, it looks like he has lost a lot of his pace. In the Premier League, against a side like Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds, this is something that you need. The stats emphasised how he was run ragged, mainly by former Palace loanee Patrick Bamford.

He won no ground duels and only one aerial duel (SofaScore), whilst he also lost possession five times. He also could have done a lot better for Leeds’ first goal. The defender was not quick enough to defend Jack Harrison’s shot properly so instead of blocking it, he deflected it past Vicente Guaita.

There is no doubting that Cahill has shone in the Premier League, but performances like the one against Leeds suggest he shouldn’t be relied on as a consistent starting centre-back, but more one who is called upon when needed.

Here is what Palace fans said about Cahill:

“Luka was woeful. Cahill and Dann were awful, but it’s not their fault they’re ancient. Ayew tried and failed.”

“Martin Kelly can’t get a game in this team. Just think about that for a second. When has he ever let us down? Dann and Cahill were woeful tonight, so bad it was embarrassing, especially Dann”

“Cahill is gone. So good last season. So poor this year”
