Many Crystal Palace fans are reacting to the latest news on defender James Tomkins, who is currently unavailable due to an injury.
According to The Athletic journalist Dominic Fifield, Tomkins’ fractured eye socket may end his season at Palace as his sight has yet to recover fully from the injury sustained in training. Fifield went on to report that Hodgson said he is relieved that “we’re not talking about him being forced to retire from football”.
Tomkins has had a very good career in south London, featuring over 100 times and scoring eight goals along the way, (Transfermarkt). In these games, 104 have come in the Premier League, with 25 clean sheets and eight goals in top-flight action for the Eagles.
One Palace fan called it a ‘massive loss’ and it is easy to see why as the Eagles earned back to back clean sheets against Sheffield United and Arsenal when he returned to fitness earlier this year, but hadn’t picked up a league clean sheet without him in the side since the opening day of the season.
Perhaps the concerns around his injury explain why both Scott Dann and Gary Cahill are rumoured to be in talks for new contracts.
Here is how Palace fans reacted to the injury update:
“Ah this is really bad news Dom, definitely our best Centre Back, he just seems to have no luck with injuries, shame as he also comes across as a really good bloke!”
“Feel so bad for him the bloke has no luck. Been quality when he’s played”
“Massive loss, as he is in my opinion, our best defender”
“Our best centre half in my opinion, big loss.”
“Oh no, that’s horrific. Poor guy. He’s been a massive loss for us.”
“Oh my. Poor lad.”
