Crystal Palace: Peter Ramage speaks out on Wilfried Zaha transfer links to Newcastle United

Crystal Palace: Peter Ramage speaks out on Wilfried Zaha transfer links to Newcastle United - Crystal Palace News

Former Crystal Palace and Newcastle United defender Peter Ramage believes that Wilfried Zaha possibly leaving the Eagles to go to Newcastle would not be a good move for the winger.

With Palace rejecting bids from both Arsenal and Everton, who were trying to acquire the Ivorian international last summer, Zaha put in a transfer request but stayed at the club, and this has seen various media outlet link him to teams across the country. Newcastle, who are currently in the midst of takeover rumours, are the latest club said to be interested as they look to bolster their squad with talent.

If the new Saudi-led takeover were to be allowed, the Magpies would reportedly become the richest club in the league, and this has seen them linked to many world-class players.

Ramage, who knows Zaha well as the two were both in the squad who helped the Eagles get promoted to the Premier League, spoke to the Back of the Nest podcast about the move (via The Chronicle) and said, “Newcastle wouldn’t be a good move for him in that respect and it would obviously be more the financial aspect rather than anything else if he was to come to Newcastle, and we are just talking hypothetically here.

“For me, for Wilf if he wants to break into the top four and Palace have got the ability to do it, but it would be a lot harder for them than those top clubs like Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City.

“I have even seen him linked with the top clubs in Europe and he is coming up to 28 now, and the longer he waits, the less of an opportunity he will get. I think now, for Palace, his market value will decrease the longer it goes on.

“Obviously, everyone at Palace would love for him to stay and the club to build a team around him to get into those upper echelons of the Premier League.

“But realistically, from Wilf’s point of view, is that going to happen? Probably not.”

It’s hard to disagree with Ramage here – if Zaha wants to move on to a more successful club at the age of 27, it needs to be one that is already battling at the top and not one that is attempting to try to move up the table. Newcastle currently sit below the Eagles in the Premier League, via BBC Sport, so it would not be worth the winger leaving the club that adores him at this moment in time.
