Crystal Palace had to face West Ham United without defender James Tomkins as he suffered an injury in training, and Roy Hodgson has provided a worrying injury update on the player ahead of Saturday’s clash with Wolves.
The latest on Tomkins
Speaking in his press conference before the match against Wolves, Hodgson said: “Tomkins will see a specialist for a third time today. I’m hoping the news will be good. It was a lot more positive the last time I spoke to him but unfortunately we’re going to have to pass on him for now.”
This is a blow for Palace
Tomkins has had a very good career in south London, featuring over 100 times and scoring eight goals along the way, (Transfermarkt). In these games, 104 have come in the Premier League, with 25 clean sheets and eight goals in top-flight action for the Eagles.
His injuries have been an issue, but Hodgson has praised the defender when fit saying back in 2019 that the defender is “excellent”.
Since then, the numbers with and without Tomkins have agreed with the manager’s assessment. The Eagles earned back to back clean sheets against Sheffield United and Arsenal when he returned to fitness this year, but hadn’t picked up a league clean sheet without him in the side since the opening day of the season.
He made his first start of the season just before the end of December, and in the four starts from that game, Palace avoided defeat in three. Therefore, it is a big blow for the club to hear that the injury means he is unavailable for the foreseeable future.
