# Crystal Palace: Pete O’Rourke delivers ‘smart’ Michael Olise verdict

**[Crystal Palace](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/crystal-palace-news/) are being ‘smart’ in offering Michael Olise a new contract, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.**

### The lowdown: Rising star

Signed for £8m from Reading last year ([BBC](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/57768231)), the exciting attacking midfielder has enjoyed a stellar first season in the Premier League.

Having made a successful breakthrough into Patrick Vieira’s side this term, Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Chelsea have all since been [linked](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-10538057/Arsenal-Chelsea-Bayern-Munich-interested-Crystal-Palaces-rising-star-Michael-Olise.html) with a move for the 20-year-old.

Although Olise is under contract until 2026 ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/michael-olise/leistungsdaten/spieler/566723)), David Ornstein has recently reported for [The Athletic](https://theathletic.com/3299998/2022/05/09/ornstein-haaland-deal-done-pogba-says-no-to-city-move-elneny-contract-talks-olise-new-deal/?source=emp_shared_article) that Palace are set to offer improved terms to the French youth international in order to stave off potential suitors.

### The latest: O’Rourke welcomes Olise talks

Speaking to [GiveMeSport](https://www.givemesport.com/88007955-crystal-palace-50m-internal-talks-smart-business-by-parish-at-selhurst-park), O’Rourke praised the move from Palace and said that chairman Steve Parish is right to be entering negotiations with Olise at this juncture.

The journalist explained: “It’s a smart piece of business by Parish and Palace because they are just protecting their assets.

“They took a chance on Olise when signing him from Reading last summer and he’s been a revelation for Crystal Palace. He looks like a really impressive player and is still young.”

### The verdict: Spot on

Getting the France youth starlet to put pen to paper on a new deal would be a real feather in the cap for the Eagles this summer, particularly if the club can renegotiate an existing [reported](https://www.football.london/arsenal-fc/news/olise-release-clause-revealed-arsenal-23890677) £35m release clause.

So far this season, Olise has scored [four times and provided nine assists](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/michael-olise/leistungsdaten/spieler/566723) in 32 appearances across all competitions, starting 12 Premier League games and earning a 6.91 average [Sofascore](https://www.sofascore.com/player/michael-olise/978838) rating in the process.

Capable of playing in a [variety](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/michael-olise/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/566723) of attacking midfield positions, the youngster was dubbed [‘fearless’](https://www.readingchronicle.co.uk/sport/18181789.reading-fcs-goal-scoring-hero-sam-baldock-full-praise-young-star-michael-olise/) by former Reading team-mate Sam Baldock following a standout display against Nottingham Forest in December 2020, and he seems certain to have a bright future at Selhurst Park.

Given the youngster’s level of performance and indeed his potential, currently valued at £19.8m by [Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/michael-olise/marktwertverlauf/spieler/566723) and with European superpowers already paying attention, Palace should be looking to at least double Olise’s current release clause.
