Crystal Palace midfielder James McCarthy has still not signed a new deal at the club and the latest reports provide an update that fans of the South London side may not want to see as various sides are now interested in him.
The latest on McCarthy
According to The Daily Mail, Celtic’s interest in the player has not gone away. They are interested in signing him on a pre-contract as they weigh up an end-of-season overhaul for their squad.
However, the midfielder has a number of options now building up with other Premier League clubs recognising he could prove a good addition as a free agent. Some of the other sides reportedly interested are Burnley, West Ham, Brighton, West Brom and Championship promotion chasers Bournemouth.
Should Palace be worried?
With his expiring contract still not sorted out, there is a real possibility that he could leave on a free, so the club need to act fast if they want to keep him, or at the very least secure a fee for his services.
Roy Hodgson praised the midfielder last season, saying: “I think he’s been excellent, getting better and better.” Indeed, he has managed 1.6 tackles and 1.1 clearances per game this campaign, so he is vital to protecting the defence when called upon (WhoScored). Despite him only featuring seven times in England’s top flight in 2020/21, the Eagles should be worried about him not signing a new deal and moving elsewhere for nothing.
With Max Meyer’s contract terminated, the South London side don’t have a lot of depth in the centre of midfield. They have Luka Milivojevic, James McArthur, Cheikhou Kouyate and Jairo Riedewald as options – even this is a worry as McArthur is 33 and Kouyate is playing as a centre-back.
Therefore, if McCarthy did leave, it would limit Hodgson’s options in the middle of the pitch massively.
