The arrival of striker Jean-Philippe Mateta has excited many Crystal Palace fans. However, this new arrival could be bad news for Christian Benteke’s future at Selhurst Park.
The latest on Benteke
According to The Daily Mail, former Eagles manager Sam Allardyce wants a reunion with the Belgian striker. He is on the list of forwards being considered by West Bromwich Albion this month. Crystal Palace are reportedly considering listening to offers for Benteke following Mateta’s arrival.
Should Palace let Benteke leave
The current campaign has been a much better one for the 30 year-old in comparison to the last couple of seasons and this has seen him win back Roy Hodgson’s trust. He has scored three goals in 13 Premier League appearances. In contrast, across the 2018/19 and the 2019/20 seasons, Benteke only managed three goals in 44 appearances (Transfermarkt).
The Palace manager praised him following his brace against West Brom earlier this season, saying: ‘We’ve always known that Christian Benteke is a quality centre-forward with an awful lot of strings to his bow. It was great last Saturday that he was able to show the world that.’
The tally however still isn’t good enough and Palace fans will definitely be wondering what went wrong after he scored 17 goals in his first season.
Therefore, it might be best for all parties if the forward was allowed to depart. He is now 30, so arguably his best years are nearly over or already past him. With his contract expiring in the summer, now would be the best time to let the £8.10m-valued ace leave and make at least something from his departure.
