Crystal Palace defender Mamadou Sakho is in the final year of his contract. It is currently unknown whether the club are looking to extend his deal. Real Betis may force their hand however, as reports claim the La Liga outfit are plotting above for the former PSG starlet.
Mamadou Sakho transfer update
According to Estadio Deportivo, Real Betis are reportedly looking to acquire Sakho on a free transfer next summer. They hope that they can offer him a contract that will tempt him to make the move from South London to Spain.
Big decision for Sakho and Palace
Speaking earlier this season following Sakho’s return from injury, Roy Hodgson praised the former Liverpool man’s work ethic in getting back to fitness as ‘incredible’.
His injuries have been an issue as they have seen him miss 375 days of football since he joined the Eagles (Transfermarkt). However, he has been a key player for the club when fit, especially in the 2017/18 campaign. It was arguably his best, as he managed 1.1 tackles, 1.6 interceptions, and 5.2 clearances a game (WhoScored). If he could rekindle this form, then there is no doubt that Palace should keep him.
Still, with the amount of injuries he has picked up and the fact that he is now 30, the Eagles might have already seen the best from Sakho.
They did splash the cash when they brought the 6 ft 2 beast to Selhurst Park from Anfield, as he cost them £25.38 million (Transfermarkt), so from a business perspective it could hurt the club to lose him for free.
That said, with the likes of Gary Cahill, Scott Dann, James Tomkins and Cheikhou Kouyaté all 30 years-old or older, there needs to be some new blood at the back, so it might be a case of cutting ties with the injury-prone members of the veteran centre-back crew.
