Rangers: Gers ‘expected’ to sign Darius Olaru this summer

Glasgow Rangers are reportedly ‘expected’ to bring central midfielder Darius Olaru to Ibrox this summer.

The Lowdown: Summer interest

Rangers were linked with a move for Olaru last summer, but a move never materialised.

They ended up bolstering their midfield options in January with the signings of Todd Cantwell and Nicolas Raskin, but with three centre midfielders all out of contract in the summer, Michael Beale’s side could look to strengthen again in the middle of the park.

The Latest: Olaru ‘expected’ to sign

As per Romanian news outlet Pro Sport, the Gers are ‘expected’ to sign Olaru this summer in a deal worth at least €6m (£5.3m).

They are set to send their scouts to Romania to watch him in action for FCSB, and if impressed, will begin talks over a €6m deal, but FCSB owner Gigi Becali may demand a transfer fee closer to €8m (£7.1m) to let him go.

The Verdict: Get it done

If the Light Blues can sign Olaru for around £5.3m, then it could turn out to be a real bargain in the future.

At 24 years of age, he has played over 150 times in the Romanian top flight, and has been capped nine times by the Romania national team.

At international level, he plays with Ianis Hagi, and so could form a formidable new partnership with his fellow countryman at the Teddy Bears.

Hailed as an ‘exciting‘ talent by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, Olaru is also captain of FCSB despite his relatively young age, meaning that he would also bring extra leadership qualities to Ibrox.

He has even been likened to Manchester City superstar Kevin De Bruyne for the way he plays total football, covers huge areas of the pitch, and excels in passing and shooting, so this is a potential deal for Rangers supporters to get very excited about.
