# Manchester United: Diogo Costa’s agent working on Old Trafford move

**[Manchester United](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/manchester-united-news/) are reportedly eyeing a move for FC Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa, with the player’s agent already working on a transfer to Old Trafford.**

### The Lowdown: Costa profiled

Hailed as [‘superb’](https://twitter.com/ZachLowy/status/1523026844328595456?s=20&t=lbhDh7ktLl3VIr4o1FLdnQ) by Portuguese football podcaster Zach Lowy, the 23-year-old appears to be at the top of his game, with a career-high €35m (£30.9m) [Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/diogo-costa/marktwertverlauf/spieler/357153) valuation.

Sponsored by [Adidas](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/diogo-costa/profil/spieler/357153), the Portugal international was [first choice](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/diogo-costa/nationalmannschaft/spieler/357153/verein_id/3300) at the World Cup in Qatar, helping his country to reach the quarter-finals. He has made [88](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/diogo-costa/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/357153) first-team appearances for Porto after progressing through their academy, keeping [36](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/diogo-costa/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/357153) clean sheets.

### The Latest: Costa lined up as De Gea replacement

[The Sun](https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/20935569/man-utd-diogo-costa-yann-sommer-transfer-bayern-munich/) relayed an update from [CM Jornal](https://www.cmjornal.pt/) regarding United and Costa. They claimed that the Red Devils are looking to replace David de Gea with the 23-year-old, who has a £66m release clause.

The report adds that the Portuguese goalkeeper’s agent Jorge Mendes is already working behind the scenes on securing a switch to Old Trafford for his client.

### The Verdict: After Butland?

It seems as if the Red Devils are closing in on a loan move for [Jack Butland](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/manchester-united-news/jack-butland-transfer-update/) after Martin Dubravka was recalled by Newcastle. De Gea and Tom Heaton are the only senior goalkeeping options available to Erik ten Hag, and both players are [out of contract](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/manchester-united/kader/verein/985) at the end of the campaign.

Therefore, it is good to see that Old Trafford officials are looking at their long-term goalkeeping ranks with a move for Costa, and it seems as if a deal in 2023 is a real possibility with Mendes already at work.
