England’s Crazy Love of Beckham: The Best of FootballFancast.com

Tom Jones 16 October 2009, 14:51 3 minutes read

BeckhamWe start this week with the senseless Man of the Match Award that David Beckham was given following his thirty minute cameo for England against Belarus on Wednesday. Supporters seem to be split on the role of the former Manchester United player, as many England fans gave him a rapturous reception at Wembley and want him to go to the 2010 World Cup, but FFC columnist Scott McCarthy cannot understand the David Beckham and England love-in:

“The whole worshipping of a player who is only the third best option wide on the right (behind Aaron Lennon and Theo Walcott) is becoming, if anything, a little tiresome.

“Even Beckham’s most loyal subjects – the Wembley crowd – couldn’t believe that he was being deemed to be the best player on the park on the night.”

Last weekend also saw the first ever England match to be broadcast only on the internet, and the hundreds of thousands of fans who signed up must have wondered why they bothered. FFC columnist Chris Mackin was less than impressed with England’s performance but it wasn’t totally doom and gloom:

“There are positives to take away from it: Wayne Rooney’s tenacity and the hope that this will help ease the World Cup expectations of those more prone to hysteria.

“As for England?  Stodgy and slow – not just for people watching on a 56k connection without properly disabling their hardware acceleration.”

Emile Heskey faces some tough decisions ahead of the January transfer window as he may be forced to leave Aston Villa in search of first team football and a place on the plane to South Africa next summer. FFC guest columnist Greg Symonds is one Villa fan who won’t be said to see Heskey leave the midlands club:

“There is certainly no part of me that will be sad to see him leave, as I don’t think that he adds anything to the current team, therefore we would be better off without him.

“His arrival in January was a gamble and one that didn’t pay off, but he certainly wouldn’t be the first striker Villa have spent money on in the past that has failed and he certainly won’t be the last.”

Finally the international break gave us a chance to reflect on the Premier League season so far. FFC blogger Gawthaman Gobinath welcomes the extra competition that Manchester City have added to the league this season:

“What’s the problem with Manchester City? Is it the sheer scale of the spending? Is it the fact that it has been done in shorter amount of time than normal? These are not convincing reasons to vilify the Sky Blues.

“City may not win the league this season, but they are real contenders. This will dismay their critics, but I wish them the best of luck. They have only served to make the league more competitive and therefore more enjoyable to follow.”

I have been a Newcastle Fan for a number of years now. Favourite player has to be the Toon legend that is Alan Shearer. Hoping that Newcastle bounce straight back into the Premiership even though i am quite enjoying them winning most weeks for a change. Best football memory is England 4-1 Netherlands at Euro '96.
