Everton are currently leading the race to sign Villarreal striker Boulaye Dia this summer, according to reports.

The Lowdown: January contact made

The Senegal international is out on a season-long loan at Salernitana, but they do have the option to make the switch permanent for €12m (£10m) at the end of the season.

The Toffees made contact with the 26-year-old’s representatives to enquire about his price tag in January, but were dealt a blow after learning that he was keen to remain in the Serie A.

Sean Dyche may have since taken to the dugout, but it sounds like the Merseysiders are still monitoring their old target ahead of a potential move to the Premier League

The Latest: Everton in pole position

According to Italian outlet Tutto Salernitana (via Sport Witness), Everton are one of Dia’s ‘many admirers’ having ‘come forward’ to sign him last month.

The Oyonnax native’s value is reported to be ‘at least’ €20m (£17m) thanks to his recent performances, with his loan club having to decide whether to keep him for good or buy permanently and then cash in.

The Goodison Park outfit are the only potential suitor specifically name-checked by the source, meaning that they are on the ‘front row’ should he become available in the months ahead.

The Verdict: No-brainer of a decision

Dia has been dubbed ‘magic’ by sports journalist Usher Komugisha, and Everton completing a deal for him should the opportunity arise is a no-brainer of a decision to make.

The Nike-sponsored star has so far posted 12 goal contributions in 21 appearances for Salernitana and offers versatility with the ability to operate on the left wing as well as at centre-forward (Transfermarkt).

Dia is also an experienced international with 23 caps to his name having most recently represented Senegal at the World Cup, so he could be the attacking reinforcement that the Toffees have been searching for.
