Everton reportedly want a reunion with former midfielder Ross Barkley at Goodison Park.

The Lowdown: Gueye first?

As per Italian football journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Goodison Park outfit are 'closing' in on a deal for former player Idrissa Gueye.

Both them are PSG are 'confident' that the move could be completed 'this week', as the Senegal international looks to return back to Merseyside.

The midfield is clearly a big focus this summer, with Amadou Onana already signed on the dotted line and now potentially another one on the way.

The Latest: Barkley wanted

As per 90min, Frank Lampard's team also 'want a reunion' with Barkley, with Chelsea 'keen' to offload him before the transfer window shuts.

However, Celtic have also been offered his services, while West Ham United are also thought to be interested too.

Chelsea would prefer to sell him permanently, although a loan may be considered closer to the deadline.

The Verdict: Smart signing

Given that the Blues have already signed Conor Coady on loan, and the Premier League does not permit more than two players registered on loan from fellow top flight sides, a temporary deal for Barkley could prevent them from signing Armando Broja, thought to be a priority.

A permanent move could still be a smart piece of business though, given that the six-foot-two midfielder is in his prime at 28 years of age, and will be eager to impress ahead of trying to break back into the England squad for the FIFA World Cup in the winter.

Once dubbed the ‘next Wayne Rooney‘, Barkley showed a lot of promise at Everton as a youngster, breaking into the first team as a teenager and going on to make 179 appearances, scoring 27 goals and making 28 assists (Transfermarkt).

Of course, he left the Toffees in bad taste, but Lampard has sung his praises in the past, and so Barkley could really help his side out going into the rest of the season.
