Everton have given fans what they want and have offered veteran Leighton Baines a new deal, but they are still waiting for the defender to respond.
BBC Sport reported that the club has put a new one-year contract on the table for Everton icon Baines, but a decision has yet to be made on his part. It will be a welcome piece of news to the supporters who have been urging this exact scenario to happen all season.
If Baines doesn’t accept the new deal, he will walk away from the club as a free agent this summer, after spending 13 years at Goodison Park.
Will Mason Holgate be the future Everton captain?
Alex Bruce has given his thoughts on the contract situation and thinks it would be foolish for the 35-year-old to reject the offer.
“I think he’d be silly not to sign it, I have to say,” the defender told Football Insider. “Get that security and play when you need to. I’m sure Leighton’s got the sense to do that and I’m sure that’s what he’ll do.”
Baines joined the Merseyside outfit in 2007 and has made a total of 417 appearances in blue, scoring 39 goals and assisting 67 in that time (via Transfermarkt).
