Everton midfielder Andre Gomes is nearing an exit from Goodison Park, according to the Liverpool ECHO.

The Lowdown: Gomes’ pre-season

Despite travelling to the United States with the rest of the Toffees squad, the 28-year-old is yet to kick a ball for the side in pre-season.

According to reports (p45), there is no indication that the former Portugal international is injured, given his ability to train with the rest of the team during the Blues’ tour.

Gomes is currently one of the highest earners at Everton, where he pockets over £100,000-a-week, or over £5m-a-year (via PRT).

The Latest: Gomes nearing exit

According to a report by the Liverpool ECHO (print edition [25 July, pg. 45], via Goodison News), the Toffees midfielder is nearing a departure from Goodison Park.

Journalist Connor O’Neill writes that somewhere along the line, something has gone badly wrong for Gomes.

He believes the midfielder finds himself on the outside looking in; a stark contrast from the man who rushed back from his horror injury to play an important part in Everton’s XI.

O’Neill concludes his report by claiming that the end looks very near for Gomes’ Blues career.

The Verdict: Time to move on

The Portuguese player made just 14 Premier League appearances for Frank Lampard’s team last season.

Averaging a 6.35 match rating for the 2021/22 campaign (via SofaScore), the midfielder ranked in Everton’s bottom five players for the season.

With such a large salary, a struggling Toffees side could use this money to add reinforcements elsewhere, bringing in more long-term additions to the club.

With a £16.2m market valuation, it would not be a surprise to see Gomes leave Merseyside this summer for a reasonable fee after making 100 appearances for the Blues.
