Everton are likely to secure the signing of Blackburn Rovers striker Ben Brereton Diaz before Thursday’s transfer deadline, according to journalist Jacque Talbot.

The Lowdown: Maupay’s arrival

With Toffees manager Frank Lampard desperate to sign a striker after the departure of Richarlison earlier in the summer, the Blues set to work on a number of possible targets.

After a multitude of bids were made for various forwards, Everton recently completed the signing of Neal Maupay from Premier League rivals Brighton in a deal worth £15m.

The 26-year-old signed a three-year contract with the Merseyside club, with the option of extending this by a further year in 2025.

The Latest: One more striker

Despite the arrival of Maupay at Goodison Park, Everton reportedly remain in the market for another striker. According to 90min, the Toffees are looking to close a deal for Brereton Diaz before the Thursday night deadline.

With talks also progressing for Serhou Guirassy, Talbot has shared his verdict on Everton’s transfer situation.

Speaking with GiveMeSport about the likelihood of the Toffees signing the Rennes striker, the journalist claimed: “Yes, if they can’t get Brereton Diaz. He’s not the best player, but he will certainly be one they’re looking at.

“I don’t think he’s the number one target – I think that’s Brereton Diaz, of Blackburn. I imagine that will get done, which makes a lot of sense.”

The Verdict: Would be a strong signing

Despite a lack of Premier League experience for Brereton Diaz, the Toffees would be adding a proven goalscorer from the English footballing pyramid to their ranks.

In 37 appearances in the Championship last season, the Chile international netted an incredible 22 goals, bringing his overall tally in the second tier to 41 goals in 176 appearances.

At just 23 years of age, the striker would still have plenty of time to adjust to the rigours of the top flight, so sealing a deal for the youngster could be shrewd business for Everton in the long-run.

Therefore, if the Blues are able to get a deal across the line before Thursday’s transfer cut-off, Brereton Diaz could be a brilliant addition to Lampard’s squad, especially given Dominic Calvert-Lewin's injury troubles.
