Many Everton fans were both confused and frustrated to see that Carlo Ancelotti left Michael Keane on the bench for their Premier League match against West Ham.
The 27 year-old centre-back has had a very good season so far in his 15 Premier League appearances. He has managed on average 1.3 interceptions and 4.3 clearances a game (WhoScored). He has also been a good attacking threat, scoring two goals.
The fact that he has featured in every other game and now been dropped makes the decision surprising, however with the congested fixtures, it does make sense for him to be rested occasionally.
The Toffees faithful let their anger and confusion known on social media though, with one calling the decision ‘strange’, whilst another said they were ‘outraged’, as fans lambasted the manager’s big call during the build-up and first half of Friday’s clash.
With the club right in the thick of the top four and even title race, every game and point is crucial, so fans do have a right to feel aggrieved that perhaps their most reliable defender is watching from the stands.
Everton fans lash out at Ancelotti’s decision:
“Strange, no Michael Keane”
“I AM OUTRAGED. BRING BACK MICHAEL KEANE”
“@Everton Aww I was actually excited to see Iwobi today. Hope he’s okay. And why on earth is Keane benched!?”
“Why is Keane on the bench”
“Keane benched? 🙁 he’s been quality”
“GET MICHAEL KEANE BACK IN THAT TEAM”
