A new contract for James Rodriguez is Everton's 'main objective', according to a report from Marca.

The Colombian, whose contract is currently due to expire next summer, joined from Real Madrid on a free transfer last September in what was hailed as Everton's 'biggest ever' coup.

Rodriguez has enjoyed a successful debut campaign on Merseyside, scoring six goals and providing nine assists. Only 19-goal striker Dominic Calvert Lewin has registered more direct goal involvements for the Blues.

Could Rodriguez leapfrog Bernard?

According to Spotrac, Rodriguez is earning £90,000 per week at present. That's the same as Brazilian forward Richarlison, who agreed improved terms in December 2019, but there are six players earning more than Rodriguez.

Bernard tops the salary table with a reported £120,000-per-week wage, while the ex-Barcelona trio of Yerry Mina, Lucas Digne and Andre Gomes are close behind. Gylfi Sigurdsson and Jordan Pickford are also on six-figure weekly wages, but a new deal could theoretically see Rodriguez jump up to the number one spot.

Twitter fan feed The Toffee Blues relayed the news of a potential new deal for the Colombian, and here's how some supporters reacted.
