Everton: Idrissa Gueye backed to help Toffees dominate opponents -Everton News

Everton would be able to dominate opponents in the middle of the park if Frank Lampard were to select Idrissa Gueye in the spine alongside two box-to-box runners, according to journalist Paul Brown.

The Lowdown: Midfield options

The Toffees began the season with Abdoulaye Doucoure at the base of their midfield, having played the full 90 minutes in their opening Premier League fixture against Chelsea.

However, the 29-year-old suffered a hamstring injury and was substituted early in the following week’s defeat at Aston Villa and has been absent from Frank Lampard’s matchday squads ever since.

As a result, the Everton boss turned to the transfer market for possible additions, with the club bringing in Gueye from Paris Saint-Germain and Amadou Onana from Lille in a deal worth £33m.

The Latest: Brown’s claim

Brown believes that, with Gueye returning as the team’s central defensive midfielder, the likes of Doucoure and Onana would form a brilliant midfield trio for Everton.

Speaking with GiveMeSport, the reliable journalist claimed: “I think if you started with Gueye and with two runners, like Doucoure and Onana, who can get forward but also do some of the donkey work, I think that would be a really powerful midfield that is capable of dominating a lot of teams.”

The Verdict: Plenty of experience

The former PSG man is no stranger to life in an Everton shirt. Having already made 109 appearances for the club – 100 of which have come in the Premier League – Gueye has the experience to lead Lampard’s team from the middle of the park.

Having played with the Senegal international whilst at Aston Villa, Micah Richards has hailed the 32-year-old upon his return to Goodison Park.

The Sky Sports pundit proclaimed of his former team-mate: “He will do the work of two men — the running he can do is frightening. I saw him do a drill at Villa, during the middle of Ramadan and his stamina was breathtaking. He was literally running on empty but still beat everyone.”

Combined with Doucoure’s staggering 190 games in the top flight, Onana will be in safe hands when it comes to learning from the more experienced players in the team, making Gueye’s arrival a fantastic signing for Everton.
