Everton: Kevin Campbell claims Toffees will not make top four - Everton News

Kevin Campbell has claimed that Everton will not finish in the top four of the Premier League this season despite their perfect start.

Indeed, the Merseyside club have won all four of their games in the top flight so far this term and have thus found themselves top of the table on 12 points.

Despite this, Campbell still believes that Carlo Ancelotti’s team will fail to stay in the top four come the end of the campaign because of their lack of squad depth (Genting Bet, via Liverpool Echo).

He said: “I’m very impressed by the job Carlo Ancelotti has done at Everton but I’m not surprised. In terms of recruitment, he’s fixed some of the problems that the team have had, namely the engine room in the middle of the pitch by bringing in three absolute quality players – and you can see Everton look like a completely different team with them in.

“However, I don’t think that they can make the top four purely because of the lack of squad depth. When you look past the new additions in midfield, there aren’t many other midfielders in the squad that can pick up the slack and can come in for them.

“That is where Everton can become unstuck. I’d like Everton to prove me wrong but I think Everton should be looking to finish in the top eight.”

Do Everton have a lack of squad depth?

According to the official website of the Premier League, Everton currently have 31 players in their squad for the 2020/21 season. Although they are arguably vastly covered in some areas, for example having four goalkeepers, there are other areas where they maybe could have a problem if injuries or suspensions arise.

What year did Moyes first take charge at Everton?

For example, if the Goodison Park side lost both Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison, who between them have scored seven goals in the league so far this season, there may be a worry as to who else would find the net on a regular basis.

However, if the Blues can keep all of their players fit and healthy for the majority of the term, then squad depth may not be as much of an issue as Campbell fears.

Campbell says Everton should look to finish top eight

Indeed, Campbell thinks that Everton should be looking more realistically at a top-eight finish. While that would be an improvement for the Toffees on last season, perhaps their ambitions should be higher given that they are top of the table at the moment and have recruited the likes of Allan and James Rodriguez.
