Kevin Phillips has welcomed the return of Everton’s Mason Holgate from injury as the England under-21 international will now look to boost his fitness in training.
Speaking to Football Insider, the former Aston Villa and Sunderland striker expressed just how much of a boost the return of Holgate will be to the Goodison Park club, saying:
“It is a massive boost to have him back because he is a fantastic young player.
“He was knocking on the door of the England team just before the injury.
“Him and Calvert-Lewin are emerging as the two young talents from Everton so of course it is great news to hear that he is back in training.
“He is one of their most important players because he was so consistent last season.
“The timing of his return couldn’t have come any better considering they have just come off the back of a loss. It will be great to have him back.”
Holgate was a regular for Everton before his injury
Indeed, Holgate was a regular for the Merseyside club before his unfortunate injury. The 24-year old played in 32 games in all competitions for the Toffees last season, scoring one goal and supplying three assists (Transfermarkt).
However, Holgate’s injury setback has meant that he has not yet played a match so far in the 2020/21 season.
Holgate would be the ideal partner to Keane
Indeed, Holgate would arguably be a better partner to Michael Keane than Yerry Mina. Comparing the stats of the two central defenders in the Premier League in the last campaign, Holgate averaged more tackles, interceptions and clearances per game than the Colombia international (Whoscored).
Is Holgate the best centre-back at Everton?
With Carlo Ancelotti’s team currently sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League, the 23-year-old could slot straight into a winning side and thus ease his way back into full fitness.
Holgate gives Ancelotti another option
Indeed, Holgate will at least give Ancelotti another option in the heart of the defence; and if Keane or Mina were to get injured themselves or suspended for a sustained period of time, then the ex-Barnsley centre-back would be a fine candidate to step into the breach.
