Kevin Phillips has slammed comments made by Everton man Richarlison as he compared Dominic Calvert-Lewin to Cristiano Ronaldo.
Speaking in an interview with FIFA.com, the Brazil international claimed that Calvert-Lewin had an incredible leap on him, just like Ronaldo, and added that he must be a nightmare to play against.
However, Phillips believes that Richarlison has gone a bit too far with his comments and gave Football Insider his thoughts:
“Richarlison in the week likened him to Ronaldo.
“I think he might have to look at himself in the mirror! Calvert-Lewin is good but I don’t think he’s in the Ronaldo mould just yet.
“He might have had a bit too much sugar intake when he said that!”
Dominic’s dominant start
Calvert-Lewin has had an incredible start to the 2020/21 term under Carlo Ancelotti, scoring no fewer than nine goals in just six matches in all competitions, according to Transfermarkt.
The 23-year old also scored on his debut for the senior England national team in the Three Lions’ 3-0 friendly win at Wembley stadium versus Ryan Giggs’ Wales.
Does Calvert-Lewin deserve the England call-up?
It is not just his goal contributions that have been impressive either, as Calvert-Lewin has won a quite staggering 6.8 of his duels per match in the Premier League so far, as well as averaging 3.3 shots per game, as per Sofascore.
Still a long way to go
Despite his very impressive start, Calvert-Lewin is still a very long way from emulating the heights of Ronaldo – although Phillips may be being a bit harsh considering Richarlison spoke only about their leaping ability.
The Portugal international has had such an incredible career in the beautiful game, from winning the English top-flight title three times under Sir Alex Ferguson for Manchester United to winning numerous other prestigious domestic trophies (via Transfermarkt).
it is high praise to be compared to Ronaldo in any sense, but as Phillips claims, perhaps it is a bit too far-fetched at this particular moment in time.
