Everton manager Frank Lampard has been gifted an on-field ‘bonus’ with the form of midfield trio of Idrissa Gueye, Amadou Onana and Alex Iwobi, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Lowdown: Summer investment

The Toffees splashed out just over £70m on new recruits over the summer, bringing Onana and Gueye to the Premier League, with the latter returning to Goodison Park after a three-year spell with Paris Saint-Germain.

Iwobi, who was already at the club, has now been turned into more of a central midfielder after playing mostly on the right last season, joining forces with the two fresh faces to establish a formidable three-man unit in the middle of the park.

The Latest: Jones praises Everton trio

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones was full of praise for the Everton midfield trio and believes that, as a unit, they have offered a boost for Lampard and will continue to do so moving forward.

He said of Iwobi, Gueye and Onana: “I think they really complement each other and that’s been a real bonus for Lampard coming into this job. There’s big potential for them.”

The Verdict: Making an impact

Everton have only lost one of their last seven top-flight games, so the midfielders have clearly been doing an outstanding job in the time that they have been working alongside each other.

As per WhoScored, Iwobi and Onana rank second and fifth respectively among outfield players in Lampard's squad for their performances so far in 2022/23.

The club’s other summer arrivals, Conor Coady, Dwight McNeil, Neal Maupay and James Tarkowski, have quickly been integrated to the regular starting XI, although Ruben Vinagre and James Garner have both been granted limited opportunities.

Despite Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United, the Toffees should be encouraged by the start that they have made to their campaign and can look forward to what could be achieved by the end of the season, especially if the midfield trio continue to impress.
