Everton have been monitoring Jonjoe Kenny’s progress whilst on loan with Schalke.
The club are currently caught in a conundrum surrounding their right-back position. With no decision yet made on whether to sign loanee Djibril Sidibe permanently and Cuco Martina set for an exit, options on the right are stretched extremely thin.
According to a report from The Athletic, Marcel Brands and Everton’s scouting team have been tracking Kenny’s performances in the Bundesliga. The Merseyside local joined Schalke last summer on a season-long loan deal and recently got back down to business in Germany following the resumption of their league.
Should Jonjoe Kenny be made a starter for Everton next season?
Former Everton midfielder Lee Carsley has praised Kenny’s work ethic whilst with Schalke. “I’m sure it would have been quite easy to go out on loan to another English club, but the fact he’s gone abroad to Germany, learning another language and another style of football, tells you a lot about him as a person,” the ex-Republic of Ireland international said.
“I think he’s an outstanding talent. He’s definitely got the ability and temperament to play in the Everton team and I’m sure they’ll be keeping a close eye on him.”
The club are indeed keeping tabs on the defender, but whether they plan to utilise him once he returns from loan is another story. Kenny could provide great cover for Seamus Coleman if the Blues are unable to bring in a new right-back. No concrete talks of bringing Sidibe to the club full-time have been reported either.
For now it’s a waiting to see what Carlo Ancelotti decides to do with the 23-year-old in the summer.
