Everton are hoping to secure a January transfer deal for Atletico Madrid striker Matheus Cunha.

The Lowdown: Cunha's season so far

Back in the 2021 summer transfer window, the Brazilian joined Atletico from German club Hertha Berlin.

Since then, the 23-year-old has gone on to make 54 appearances for the La Liga side across all competitions, scoring seven times and providing eight assists.

Now that the January transfer window is on the horizon, Everton are one of the Premier League clubs interested in potentially signing the attacker.

The Latest: Everton admire Cunha

A recent report from The Athletic had this to say about Everton's interest in Cunha, who also has the likes of Leeds United and Wolves circling a move.

"Everton are long-term admirers and would like to bring Cunha to Goodison Park this winter. It is not clear if they are in a position to buy him or would need to structure a package differently, nor whether the 23-year-old would ultimately pick Frank Lampard’s side."

The Verdict: A risk for Everton?

Desite 39 goals to his name in 178 senior club appearances throughout his career, the Brazilian has struggled to find the back of the net this season.

Specifically, with 17 games under his belt for Diego Simeone's side across all competitions, Cunha has yet to find himself on the scoresheet this term.

In addition to that, the striker also has one of the lowest percentages for passing accuracy (75.3%) and aerial duels won (17.6%) at the club this season in La Liga, further highlighting his struggles to make a meaningful impact up front.

His performances in the league this season have ultimately earned Cunha a rather uninspiring overall rating of 6.42/10 from WhoScored, making him one of the lowest-rated players at Atletico.

Taking all of this into account, we feel that it would be a big risk for Everton to put enough money and effort into signing the striker in January ahead of their Premier League colleagues.
