Everton's business, or possible lack thereof, in the January transfer window has the potential to define their season, according to reliable journalist Patrick Boyland.

The Lowdown: Everton still not convincing

Frank Lampard's side suffered an insipid 2-0 defeat at home to Leicester City last weekend, which was preceded by a dour 0-0 draw away to Fulham.

It means that Everton sit 16th in the Premier League currently, with doubts perhaps still remaining over whether or not Lampard is the right man for the job.

January reinforcements appear to be needed in order for the Blues to pull clear of the relegation zone, but there is no guarantee that new signings will be made.

The Latest: January spending could be pivotal

Taking to Twitter in sharing a corresponding article for The Athletic, Boyland admitted that Everton's business in the next transfer window could prove pivotal.

He stated:

"Increasingly feels like season will be governed by what's done in January market. Lampard looking for solutions in current squad to lack of threat but may not find any."

The Verdict: New faces needed

If Everton don't make any signings in January it would feel like negligence from the owners, with Lampard's squad currently lacking depth and quality amid a spate of injuries.

They are a difficult team to break down, having brought in James Tarkowski and Conor Coady in the summer, but their attacking threat is hugely lacking.

They have only scored 11 goals in 14 league games this season, which sums up their struggles and negates the good of their fourth-best concession record of 14 goals, the fewest of any team outside the top three.

Getting in a couple of new faces in January is paramount - if not, Everton could find themselves back in the same situation as last season, battling for their lives in the remaining weeks of the season.
