Everton: Toffees interested in Steven Bergwijn -Everton News

Everton are interested in signing wantaway Tottenham Hotspur forward Steven Bergwijn, according to a report from The Daily Mail

The lowdown: Bergwijn’s career so far

A product of the youth system at PSV Eindhoven, the Dutchman made 149 appearances for the Eredivisie giants before moving to Spurs for £27m in 2020 to play under Jose Mourinho (BBC).

Since arriving in the Premier League, the versatile 24-year-old has scored just eight times and provided 10 assists in 83 outings for Tottenham.

After the winger recently admitted a desire to leave Spurs in the upcoming summer transfer window, saying “I want to go and play somewhere weekly”, Everton could be prepared to make their move for the wantaway ace.

The latest: Everton interested in Bergwijn

As per the Daily Mail, Everton and Ajax are leading the chase to sign the Netherlands international. It’s claimed that Bergwijn has ‘drawn interest’ from Goodison Park as Frank Lampard attempts to strengthen the ranks on the blue half of Merseyside.

The report added that Ajax had a £17m bid rejected for the 24-year-old, who was hailed by compatriot Virgil van Dijk for an ‘excellent’ performance this week as he scored in Netherlands’ 4-1 victory over Belgium.

He also completed two successful dribbles and two key passes in a performance which earned a Sofascore rating of 7.4.

The verdict: No-brainer

During 2021/22, Bergwijn scored four times and provided two assists in 32 appearances across all competitions, demonstrating impressive versatility in the process by operating on either wing, as a centre-forward and as an attacking midfielder.

Valued at £16.2m and under contract in London until 2025 (Transfermarkt), prising the 18-cap dynamo away from Tottenham could prove to be an expensive venture for Everton’s director of football Kevin Thelwell.

Everton fans! Do you remember who scored your first league goal of the 21/22 season?

However, with Bergwijn still just 24 and boasting an abundance of top-level experience, and with the capability of offering much-needed regular first-team football, Lampard and co should be doing everything possible to bring the talented Dutchman to Goodison Park.
