Everton sporting director Marcel Brands has refused to rule out a January move for Manchester United’s Donny van de Beek.
The Lowdown: Toffees wanted van de Beek
Van de Beek’s move to Old Trafford from Ajax did not go well. Last season, he managed just 19 Premier League appearances, mostly from the bench, as he failed to break into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s starting line-up (Transfermarkt).
As such, the Toffees made a late move during the summer transfer window to sign the Netherlands international, but the approach was blocked by the Red Devils (via weallfollowunited.com).
The Latest: Brands discusses van de Beek
Speaking to Dutch broadcaster NOS (via Goodison News), Brands was asked about Everton’s interested in van de Beek. He said:
“You always depend on whether a club wants to cooperate.
“And it is early October, so much can still happen with injuries. United are playing on various fronts, it’s hard to say now.”
The Verdict: Worth a try
This term, van de Beek remains underused by Solskjaer. All in all this term, he has just three appearances to his name, with no starts in the Premier League, and it does not seem like he will be a regular feature in the starting XI any time soon.
Would you like to sign van de Beek?
However, as he showed at Ajax as the Dutch side made the Champions League semi-finals in 2019, £22.5m-valued van de Beek (Transfermarkt) has plenty of talent. That was also backed up by Bruno Fernandes, who called the 24-year-old “quality” earlier this year (via football-oranje-com).
A move to Everton, either on a temporary or permanent basis, could be exactly what he needs to retrieve his best form, and Rafael Benitez could be capturing an exciting talent in the process.
