Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, former Everton striker Marcus Bent does not think his old side are looking for defenders right now.

So far this transfer window, Everton have brought in wingers Andros Townsend and Demarai Gray, as well as goalkeeper Asmir Begovic to provide cover for Jordan Pickford.

They had been linked with Arsenal centre-half Ben White before his move to the Emirates from Brighton but nothing materialised.

Ultimately, for Bent, the likelihood is that Rafael Benitez and Marcel Brands are concentrating their efforts further up the pitch. The ex-Toffees player told TT:

"At the back, I don't think Everton are looking for defenders. I think it's more so midfielders and going forward."

Currently, Benitez has Michael Keane, Yerry Mina, Ben Godfrey and Mason Holgate to call upon, so it is easy to understand why central defence would not be a priority.

Up front, on the other hand, could be another matter. If Moise Kean returns to Paris Saint-Germain following his loan spell there last season or joins Inter Milan, who are currently being linked with him, it would leave Everton a little light.

An injury to Dominic Calvert-Lewin and the Toffees could be in serious trouble, so you would expect that to perhaps be more of a priority should Kean leave Goodison Park once again.
