Former Everton striker Marcus Bent has been talking to The Transfer Tavern about how Everton almost signed Moussa Sissoko back in 2016.
Following Newcastle’s relegation under Rafael Benitez, the Frenchman was a certainty to leave the St James’ Park oufit and continue playing in the Premier League.
Should Everton sign White?
And Everton were very interested in signing Sissoko, and had seen an offer accepted from Newcastle, but were unable to agree personal terms with the midfielder and ended up missing out.
Therefore, that allowed Spurs to step in and equal Everton’s £30m bid before securing his services on a long-term deal.
Everton bought in Idrissa Gueye from Aston Villa instead, with his excellent three seasons at Goodison Park attracting the attention of PSG in 2019.
Sissoko could be available once again this summer having fallen down the pecking order at Tottenham but Bent exclusively told The Transfer Tavern that his age would prevent Everton from revisiting their interest in the 31-year-old five years on.
“I’ll read you what they said to me. Everton were very close to signing him when he left Newcastle in 2016, but he will be 32 on the opening-day of the Premier League season, so maybe they’ve missed the boat.”
