Everton journalist Christopher Beesley has claimed that the club's Director of Football Kevin Thelwell could sign Ben Foster as a free agent.

The Lowdown: Goalkeeper injuries

It has been confirmed that the Toffees' number one Jordan Pickford and third-choice goalkeeper Andy Lonergan have recently picked up injuries.

It leaves the Goodison Park outfit with Asmir Begovic as their only fit senior goalkeeper in the squad at the moment, so they could look to dip into the free agent market, as clubs can still sign out-of-contract players outside of the transfer window.

The Latest: Foster an option

Writing in his latest piece for The Liverpool Echo, Beesley has shared that Everton manager Frank Lampard is understood to be exploring the possibility of signing a free agent as cover for Begovic while both Pickford and Lonergan are out.

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius is set to sign for Newcastle United, so former Watford shot-stopper Foster is thought to be the prime candidate.

The Verdict: Sign him

Given that he has plenty of experience in the Premier League, Foster would be a smart signing for Everton.

He actually holds the record for the most saves made by a goalkeeper in the league's history, sure-fire proof of his credentials, and he would be a fine option to compete with Begovic in the short-term and understudy for Pickford in the long run.

Foster has had some controversy with Toffees supporters before, calling them 'horrible' after his Watford team beat Everton 5-2 at Goodison Park in the Premier League last season, but there is no doubt that he would be a handy addition to the Blues if they can strike a deal for him.
