The Lowdown: Sevilla in pole
It was reported last week that Sevilla have moved into ‘pole position’ to sign Brereton Diaz ahead of the Goodison Park club.
Leeds United, Almeria, Valencia, Celta Vigo, Fulham and AC Milan are also in the race for his signature, and the Blackburn Rovers striker is believed to be ‘open’ to playing abroad.
The Latest: Everton not given up
Speaking to GiveMeSport, O’Rourke has claimed that Everton are ‘definitely’ still in the race for Brereton Diaz, despite reports of them falling behind.
The reporter stated: “I think they’ll definitely still be in the market for Brereton Diaz. They tried to sign him late in the summer transfer window, but a deal couldn’t be agreed with Blackburn.
“Brereton Diaz has made a really good start to the season and he hasn’t let the transfer speculation affect him. He’s in a strong position with his contract coming to an end at Blackburn.”
The Verdict: Exciting
It is certainly exciting for Frank Lampard and Everton to still firmly be in the race for Brereton Diaz.
Hailed as a ‘beast’ by former Rovers boss Tony Mowbray, he scored an impressive 22 goals in the Championship last season and already has eight to his name in this term (Transfermarkt), showing that he is clearly ready to make the step up to the Premier League.
The Toffees are currently averaging less than one goal per game in the top flight and could do with another reliable goalscorer up top, especially given Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s frequent injury problems.
Nonetheless, if Brereton Diaz is available in January, the Blues could do much worse but sign him up ahead of their competition.
