Former BBC pundit Noel Whelan has claimed that the prospect of Everton signing Anthony Elanga to play alongside Anthony Gordon is 'frightening'.

The Lowdown: January target

As per The Daily Mail, the Goodison Park outfit are targeting a move for Elanga, but Frank Lampard will face competition to convince him to join the Merseysiders.

The wide player is thought to be ‘frustrated’ with his playing time at Manchester United, and Lampard wants a new winger and striker for the Blues.

However, a number of other Premier League clubs are asking about Elanga’s situation, and United are yet to make a decision on him, having already let Cristiano Ronaldo depart.

The Latest: 'Frightening'

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan has claimed that the prospect of both Gordon and Elanga playing on either wing for the Toffees is 'frightening':

“Absolutely.

“If you’re lining up with Elanga on one side and Gordon on the other – that’s frightening.

“It’s full of pace and creativity, directness and goals.

“He’s not quite started hitting the goals just yet, but we’ve definitely seen enough from him to know that he’s going to be a very dangerous player in the future.

“He’s one that can help them in this battle, that’s for sure. There wouldn’t be too many teams who could match that pace if they lined up with Gordon and Elanga.”

The Verdict: Great squad option

Given that he is already experienced in the Premier League, Elanga would add some good squad depth to Everton for the rest of the season.

Lauded as a player with ‘plenty of speed‘ by top-flight legend Dwight Yorke, the Sweden international would add another dimension to their attack, and sharing a similar playing style to Gordon according to FBRef, he would indeed make the Toffees a real threat on the flanks.

Demarai Gray, who scored a wonderful equaliser against Manchester City in their 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium, also gives another option to Lampard, and the Englishman would surely relish having extra attackers at his disposal.
