Noel Whelan has been “massively impressed” by Dominic Calvert-Lewin and commented on the Everton star’s situation with England.
Speaking to Football Insider, the former Leeds striker lauded the 23-year old’s form for club and country and even suggested that he may upset the apple cart for the Three Lions by scrapping for a starting place with Tottenham ace Harry Kane. Whelan said:
“He has not let anybody down, he led the line so well.
“I was massively impressed with his performances last week. Good players settle in well.
“He is flying with his club, banging goals in for fun and that is the perfect time to bring him into the international setup.
“You are talking about somebody with every single attribute – pace, power, aerial ability and a clinical finisher. We could have a really good centre-forward scrap on our hands with him and Kane.
CALVERT-LEWIN HAS BEEN IN FINE FORM FOR EVERTON
Indeed, Calvert-Lewin has been in fine form for Ancelotti’s Toffees, as the striker has scored nine goals in just six matches over all competitions for the Merseyside club so far this season, including scoring a hat-trick in two separate games, as per Transfermarkt.
COULD CALVERT-LEWIN REPLACE KANE FOR ENGLAND?
Calvert-Lewin also scored on his senior debut for the England national team against Ryan Giggs’ Wales in a 3-0 friendly win at Wembley last week.
Does Calvert-Lewin deserve the England call-up?
However, the forward has a long way to go to match Kane’s tally for his country, as the Tottenham poacher has scored no fewer than 32 goals in 48 senior appearances, as per Transfermarkt. Kane is also the captain for Gareth Southgate’s side and so would arguably be hard to dislodge as the manager’s main man up top, even with the form of Calvert-Lewin.
Nonetheless, if the former Sheffield United player continues his good form throughout the rest of the season, and if Kane’s form diminishes, then Southgate may have a big call to make come the start of the Euros next summer.
