Transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio says that Everton had a 'bid rejected' to sign AC Milan striker Olivier Giroud on deadline day.

The Lowdown: Dyche empty-handed

New manager at Goodison Park Sean Dyche was left empty-handed by the 11pm deadline on Tuesday night, as Everton failed to bring in any new players.

With them sitting in the relegation zone and only off the bottom of the table on goal difference, the former Burnley manager has a difficult task ahead to keep his side up, starting with the visit of Premier League leaders Arsenal on Saturday lunchtime.

The Latest: Giroud bid rejected

Taking to Twitter shortly before the deadline, Di Marzio revealed that the Merseyside club had a 'bid rejected' for Giroud:

"@Everton got a bid rejected today for @acmilan's striker Olivier #Giroud."

The Verdict: Big blow

Losing out on Giroud on deadline day is certainly a big blow to the Toffees.

Hailed as an 'incredible' striker by his team-mate Davide Calabria after scoring a powerful header for Milan against Sassuolo in the Serie A over the weekend, the 36-year-old boasts six goals and four assists in the division so far this season, as well as a further six goal contributions in the UEFA Champions League (Transfermarkt).

Of course, he has plenty of experience of playing in the Premier League too, notching up an impressive latter.

At international level, Giroud won the FIFA World Cup in 2018, and was a finalist in Qatar, where he broke France's all-time goalscoring record previously held by footballing legend Thierry Henry.

Nonetheless, the striker would have not only been able to help the Blues on the pitch, but off it as well given his experience and winning mentality, so Everton may regret not going in with a higher bid for him.
