Everton: Simon Phillips says Calvert-Lewin and Maupay cannot play together

Everton: Simon Phillips says Calvert-Lewin and Maupay cannot play together -Everton News

Journalist Simon Phillips says that Everton cannot field Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Neal Maupay together as Frank Lampard does not play a two-striker formation.

The Lowdown: Calvert-Lewin return?

The big question on every Toffees supporter’s lips is whether the England marksman will make a return to the starting line-up in the Premier League clash at home to West Ham United this afternoon.

Speaking to the media in his pre-game press conference ahead of today’s match, Lampard revealed that the striker is ‘close‘ to returning from injury, and the 44-year-old is even contemplating whether to start him against the Hammers, having not featured at Goodison Park since May.

The Latest: No two-up-top

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Phillips has claimed that Lampard now has a ‘big issue’ with both Calvert-Lewin and Maupay fighting it out for one place up top, as he does not see the Everton manager changing his formation to accommodate both strikers.

He stated: “That’s the big issue that he’s [Lampard’s] going to have. It’s a good problem to have, but at the moment, in the setup that he plays, he only uses one centre forward.

“Both of these guys are only really going to be comfortable playing as a centre forward rather than a wide striker. Unless he is going to change formation and use two up top, which is not going to happen, then it looks likely that both these guys are going to have to battle it out for one position.”

The Verdict: Time to adapt

Even though Lampard is entitled to stick to his philosophy, he must also be able to adapt when needed, and that includes potentially switching to a two-striker formation to accommodate both Calvert-Lewin and Maupay.

Everton are the top-flight’s second-lowest scorers at the moment with just four goals in their opening six matches, and with no wins under their belt either, it may be time for the 44-year-old to change things up.

Both Calvert-Lewin and Maupay have shown that they are capable of scoring goals in the Premier League, so it may be time to test out how they play together.
