Journalist Fraser Fletcher has now revealed some worrying transfer news on reported Everton target Maxwel Cornet.

The Lowdown: Everton 'trying'

Fletcher reported on Wednesday afternoon that the Goodison Park outfit are 'trying' to sign Cornet on top of his Burnley teammate Dwight McNeil.

They confirmed the signing of McNeil on Thursday afternoon, so it will be interesting to see whether Cornet follows him and yet another former Claret James Tarkowski through the doors on Merseyside.

The Latest: Prefers European football

Taking to Twitter, Fletcher has now revealed that Cornet would prefer to sign for a club with European football, which of course Frank Lampard's team cannot offer him this season:

"Maxwel Cornet would prefer European football I'm told. Becoming difficult for some clubs in race to capture his signature but not impossible, Cornet still 100% expects to leave Burnley in this window."

The Verdict: Worrying

As the Toffees have no European football this term, it is certainly worrying to hear of Cornet's preference for a spot at the elite table.

West Ham United have been linked with a move for the Ivory Coast international in recent days, and they could offer him UEFA Conference League football, should they manage to get past the qualifying rounds.

Hailed as ‘electric’ last campaign by The Athletic journalist Andy Jones, Cornet showed his credentials with nine goals and one assist in the Premier League for the relegated Clarets (Transfermarkt), and would certainly be a smart signing by the Blues.

However, it looks as if they may now face an uphill battle for his signature.
