Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed that it would be ‘very strange’ if Everton did not sign any players during this month’s transfer window.
Marcel Brands told a general meeting of the Goodison Park faithful’s shareholders last week, as relayed by the Liverpool Echo, that the Merseyside club will focus on offloading players in January ahead of bringing any new stars in.
Will Everton win a trophy this season?
Speaking to Football Insider, the former Aston Villa striker was very confused as to why the Toffees would not look to strengthen the squad further this month in order to go up another level:
“It’s very strange what I’m hearing… they are not going to sign anybody.
“Everton have got a chance to get into the top four. They’ve not done it in their recent history.
“When we used to play under Martin O’Neill it was us [Aston Villa] and Everton fighting for top four – we both missed out.
“This is their chance to get it. A couple of signings and they could get it. It’s a shame the club doesn’t want to invest in signings.
“I’m sure a striker as back up for Calvert-Lewin would be perfect and maybe another winger.
“It’s a shame but we don’t know about club finances – maybe they can’t afford it.”
Everton should loom to strengthen in January
With just under two weeks left until the January transfer window closes, Carlo Ancelotti’s team should surely be looking to see if anyone is available on the market to bring in in order to strengthen the squad.
The Blues will surely be hoping to qualify for European competition for the 2021/22 term and one or two more additions may really help them to do just that.
As Agbonlahor has suggested, a back-up striker for Dominic Calvert-Lewin should be looked at in order to take the goal scoring burden off of the English talisman, just in case he finds a period of time where he is injured or misfiring in front of goal.
Nonetheless, it would not hurt Everton to go out and strengthen in this window and make a big push for a Champions League place.
