Gabby Agbonlahor has urged Everton to buy two new players to fill in their wing-back roles as Alex Iwobi and Tom Davies both had to do the job versus Leeds United in their 1-0 loss at Goodison Park in the Premier League.
Speaking to Football Insider, the former Aston Villa and England international striker thought that the duo, in particular, had a very torrid time against Marcelo Bielsa’s team and has thus urged Carlo Ancelotti to go out and buy a pair of wing-backs in the January transfer window, if he wants to continue to play with that kind of system:
Should Everton cut their losses on Iwobi?
“It was very hard for them.
“If you’re looking at Iwobi and Davies they’re not defenders so when you ask them to play in that position it’s tough for anyone.
“If I had to play in those positions I would be frightened. Those positions are where you do the most running in the team, it’s not their fault they were frightened and asked to play there.
“Ancelotti has got a lot of injuries in wing-back and full-back roles, he just put his fittest players available in there.
“You saw Fabian Delph play in that position so he’s looking at who he can trust in that position until the injured players come back.
“That position is tough because you don’t know whether to take the winger or the full-back so it’s something that only a natural defender will understand.
“Maybe it’s something Everton need to look at it in the future, to add more strength in depth in full-back positions.”
Iwobi and Davies have rarely played at wing-back
Both Iwobi and Davies have rarely played in the wing-back positions in their entire footballing careers, so it was a very big call from Ancelotti to then make them play those roles versus Leeds, a decision which was partly to blame for costing them three points on their home turf.
It is a wise suggestion by Agbonlahor for the Merseyside club to go out and but two new wing-backs next month if Ancelotti wants to continue to play that system.
Perhaps the Toffees should revert back to a back four in their next match as it is a formation that they would likely be more comfortable with given the personnel available to them at the moment.
