# Everton: Gabby Agbonlahor questions why Theo Walcott was let go amid Dan James interest

**Gabby Agbonlahor has questioned as to why Everton let Theo Walcott go out on loan to Southampton amid reported interest in signing Manchester United star Dan James.**

The Goodison Park faithful are [reportedly](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/everton-fc-transfer-rumours/everton-toffees-plot-january-move-for-manchester-united-star-dan-james/) plotting a move to sign the Wales international in the January transfer window, but the former Aston Villa striker has claimed to [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/hes-not-as-good-as-walcott-exclusive-pundit-destroys-everton-transfer-plan/) that he believes that Walcott is actually better than James at the moment and has questioned as to why the Merseyside club let him leave on loan to the Saints:

*“The Man Utd move for Daniel James was too big of a move for him so maybe he can shine at a team like Everton.*

*“My only worry for Everton is they had Theo Walcott who’s probably better than Daniel James at the moment and they let him go.*

*“Maybe it was a mistake to let Walcott go when you’re bringing in Daniel James.”*

### Would James be a good signing?

Signing James could be a decent bit of business by the Toffees, as he can be [‘exceptional’](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/everton-fc-news/everton-noel-whelan-says-toffees-need-manchester-united-star-dan-james-for-his-pace/) on his day and would provide competition for the likes of Alex Iwobi and Bernard on the wings.

He also has the experience now of playing in the Premier League and thus does not need time to adapt to the pace of the top flight.

### Should Everton have let Walcott go?

In hindsight, perhaps the Blues would not have needed to make a move for James if they did not let Walcott leave on loan to Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team.

Not only this, but the 31 year-old has had quite a good start to life back at St. Mary’s Stadium, scoring one goal and making a further two assists from four games in England’s highest division so far in the 2020/21 term ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/theo-walcott/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/33713/plus/0?saison=2020&verein=180&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=)).

In this case, maybe EFC were wrong to let him go, but should now try to sign James in order to bolster their current options in that postition.
