Greg O’Keeffe has urged Everton supporters to enjoy Amadou Onana while they can before he leaves.
The Lowdown: Sensational midfielder
Following his summer arrival from Lille for £33m, Onana has been a huge hit at Goodison Park, featuring in all but one league game under Frank Lampard.
The Belgian midfielder also put in a player-of-the-match performance in Sean Dyche’s first game against table-toppers Arsenal at the weekend, which saw him celebrate winning a throw-in during the latter stages of the game.
In what was a disastrous January transfer window as Everton lost Anthony Gordon for £40m while failing to bring any players in, Onana was even being linked with Chelsea late in the window.
The Latest: Onana may not be around for much longer
While it was a great afternoon on Saturday for Everton, O’Keeffe brought people back down to earth on the All Together Now podcast to insist Onana won’t be around for much longer given his talent.
He said: “We have got players like Onana who is going to be a world beater, we’ve said so many times. He’s got everything, hasn’t he? If he starts contributing goals as well, I just think we’ll enjoy him while we’ve got him.”
The Verdict: Everton must grow with Onana
The midfielder is still just 21 years old but was handed minutes at the World Cup to prove himself, which also shows how good of a player he is given the pool of talent Belgium have to call upon.
If Everton wish to have any chance of keeping Onana long-term, they have to start pulling away from relegation battles – something they have experienced in the last two campaigns.
Onana appears to have bought into the club culture and fanbase very quickly by celebrating marginal victories such as throw-ins during difficult games, but support and admiration can only go so far, Everton have to match his ambition, or he could be itching for a move away very soon.
