# Everton: Lucas Digne was Toffees’ unsung hero against Liverpool

**Going into the game, Everton would probably have been happy to take a point off city rivals Liverpool, but in the end they will be ruing the chances they missed that, if converted, could well have given them all three.**

After three months without a game, perhaps expectations were higher than they should have been for this clash, but it was far from a classic with the two sides managing just [six](https://www.sofascore.com/everton-liverpool/UsY) shots on target between them throughout the 0-0 draw. However, the Toffees had arguably the better opportunities in the second half, with Alisson being forced to make two strong saves from Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, whilst Tom Davies hit the post late on, as per [Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/football/everton-vs-liverpool/408274).

Although there will have been some disappointment among Everton’s ranks, this was still a strong performance that was built on a solid back-line – the Reds, who lead the Premier League by [23](https://www.skysports.com/premier-league-table) points, managed just [three](https://www.sofascore.com/everton-liverpool/UsY) shots on target despite amassing 70% possession.

Part of that impressive back four was [£25.2m](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/lucas-digne/marktwertverlauf/spieler/126664)-valued Lucas Digne. The Frenchman is more well-known for his offensive ability – he has managed [2.2](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/31/Show/England-Everton) key passes per match for the Toffees in the English top flight, more than any of his teammates, whilst he also leads the way with five assists – but he displayed his defensive qualities here instead. As Everton kept a clean sheet, he made four clearances, three tackles and one interception, whilst also prevailing in eight of a possible nine duels – that equates to an 89% win ratio.

The Toffees’ last game before the league’s suspension was a 4-0 loss against Chelsea, so it was important they got off to a good restart here. A point against the champions-elect is something that Carlo Ancelotti can build upon and he has Digne to thank, in part, for this result.
