# Everton: Blues close to Nathan Patterson signing

**Everton are nearing on the signing of Rangers full-back Nathan Patterson, according to [The Times’ Paul Joyce](https://twitter.com/_pauljoyce/status/1477716274566344710).**

### The lowdown

The Toffees may be set to get their man at the third attempt after seeing [two bids for him rejected](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2021/dec/21/everton-set-to-make-third-attempt-to-sign-rangers-nathan-patterson) in the summer.

The 20-year-old is already establishing himself as a [starter for Scotland](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/nathan-patterson/nationalmannschaft/spieler/424015) but he has been restricted to just [two Scottish Premiership starts](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/nathan-patterson/nationalmannschaft/spieler/424015) this season behind Rangers captain James Tavernier.

Patterson, who is primarily a right-back but [can also play](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/nathan-patterson/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/424015) as a right midfielder or on the left, has been described as a [‘brilliant attacking talent’](https://www.footballinsider247.com/everton-tipped-to-complete-patterson-signing-after-rangers-twist-pundit/) by former Leeds forward Noel Whelan.

### The latest

Joyce [tweeted](https://twitter.com/_pauljoyce/status/1477716274566344710) on Sunday evening that ‘Everton \[are\] closing in’ on a deal to sign Patterson.

The young defender could become the Toffees’ second arrival of the January transfer window after the signing of full-back [Vitaliy Mykolenko](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/jan/01/everton-sign-dynamo-kyiv-defender-vitaliy-mykolenko-on-four-year-deal) from Dynamo Kyiv.

### The verdict

In Patterson, Everton look to have landed a long-term successor to Seamus Coleman at right-back, with the skipper turning 34 this year. Indeed, [The Athletic’s Mark Carey says](https://open.spotify.com/episode/0pIS1pxpPe35gCntyU3yN9?si=SSv5iJW-QgKbX-Gqdbqfag) that the youngster boasts a similar profile to the Irishman.

Patterson is clearly a great prospect but Tavernier’s [level of performance and output](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/306/Show/Scotland-Rangers) makes him so difficult to dislodge at Ibrox, and the Toffees appear to have smartly capitalised on that predicament.

Provided that this deal can be completed, Benitez [can then turn his attention](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-10361059/Premier-League-club-club-transfer-guide-Tottenham-need-striker-Chelsea-want-new-defender.html) to adding a midfielder and a forward to his ranks.

**In other news, [many Everton fans slammed this man’s performance against Brighton](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/everton-fc-news/mason-holgate-brighton-premier-league/)**
