# Everton: Seamus Coleman picks up injury on international duty

**Everton captain Seamus Captain is out of Republic of Ireland’s World Cup qualifier against Serbia on Tuesday after picking up an injury against Azerbaijan at the weekend.**

### **The Lowdown: Coleman in action**

The £4.5m-valued right-back ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/seamus-coleman/marktwertverlauf/spieler/68390)) started for his country against Azerbaijan in Dublin on what was a bad day at the office for Stephen Kenny’s side.

Ireland could only manage a 1-1 draw courtesy of a late Shane Duffy equaliser, meaning that Kenny is yet to win any of his [competitive outings](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-9961043/Stephen-Kenny-Republic-Ireland-firing-slump-disappointing-draw.html) in charge of the country.

### **The Latest: Coleman injured**

Both he and Everton were handed further bad news following Saturday’s encounter, as per Irish media outlet [RTE](https://www.rte.ie/sport/soccer/2021/0905/1244842-injured-captain-coleman-ruled-out-of-serbia-qualifier/).

Coleman picked up an injury in the game and he will now miss the Serbia fixture. While the report [did not specify](https://www.rte.ie/sport/soccer/2021/0905/1244842-injured-captain-coleman-ruled-out-of-serbia-qualifier/) the nature or length of the setback, the 32-year-old may now be a doubt for the Toffees’ next match against Burnley in seven days’ time.

### **The Verdict: Blow for Benitez**

Coleman is a crucial member of Benitez’s squad and a true Everton stalwart, with [353 club appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/seamus-coleman/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/68390/verein/29). His importance is not only because of his ability and experience – his former manager Carlo Ancelotti [compared his influence as skipper to that of Paolo Maldini, John Terry and Sergio Ramos](https://royalbluemersey.sbnation.com/2020/9/27/21458193/everton-2-1-crystal-palace-ancelotti-comments-seamus-coleman-captain-maldini-terry-ramos-comparison), all of whom are Champions League-winning defenders who [worked under the Italian](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/carlo-ancelotti/eingesetzteSpieler/trainer/523) – but because of the lack of right-back options available to Benitez.

\[freshpress-poll id=”373152″\]

Jonjoe Kenny is the [only natural alternative](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-everton/kadernachposition/verein/29) to Coleman in the squad, and perhaps that explains why the Merseyside outfit were looking to bring in Serge Aurier, who is a free agent after leaving Tottenham ([via The Daily Express](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1485858/Everton-transfer-news-Serge-Aurier-Arsenal-Rafa-Benitez-Ainsley-Maitland-Niles)). Hopefully, Coleman’s issue is not serious and he can return to action soon, but Benitez and Toffees fans face a nervy week to see how severe his injury proves to be.
